Because I will never forget how desperately I wanted a change. And how powerless I felt because I didn't think I could.

I drank red wine nearly every single night (except while pregnant or nursing) for 20 years. Usually a bottle. Less early on, but often more than a bottle as time went on.

I spent so many hours of my life eagerly wondering how soon I could drink next, impatiently wondering if I could get enough to drink, and then guiltily wondering why I drank so much. 

I would try to set limits on myself, like no drinking during the work week or participating in a reset like dry January. But nothing resulted in an overall change. 

I did not, and still do not, consider myself an alcoholic. I could stop drinking without issue if there was a reason. When I was pregnant, or when I had to take a course of antibiotics that meant alcohol would make me sick, it was easy to go without.

But without that reason, I continued to drink more than I wanted. I felt guilt, shame, and complete powerlessness.  

Now I don't. I have complete alcohol independence. It changed everything. Every aspect of my life has improved. If you struggle with overdrinking, you can imagine.

I still drink. I don't have to rely on discipline or white-knuckling. I still go to parties and have fun with my friends. I no longer even think to use alcohol to help me relax, loosen up, or enjoy myself more. I just don't need it. It doesn't even enter my mind as a solution for those things anymore. In fact, I often decide I'm going to have a drink, but realize as I'm going to bed that I went the whole evening without remembering to pour one. 

Here's what I don't do anymore:

  • Wake up at 2:00am with my heart racing, dehydrated, feeling shame and guilt about how much I drank
  • Replay the previous night in my mind, cringing because I said or did something I wish I hadn't
  • Take Advil first thing in the morning because I'll inevitably have a headache
  • Question my own self-worth and capability, because I can't even get control over how much I drink

I have a MA in education and am an educator by nature. Once I learned the steps to regaining my power over alcohol, I wanted more than anything to teach it everyone who wants to know.
